Police, passers-bys, and good samaritans were all involved in a rambling crime scene that ressembled something out of a Hollywood movie, two weeks ago.

It all started when a man was approached on 122nd Avenue and Laity Street on Aug. 5.

The man was also threatened with a weapon and taken to an ATM where he had to withdraw money from his account.

Two days later in the mid afternoon, Ridge Meadows RCMP got a report of a robbery at a downtown restaurant.

Police found a suspect in Haney Place Mall but he took off, only to have a bystander try to stop him. As a result, the bystander also was assaulted receiving a minor injury in the process. The suspect was found shortly afterwards, behind Chances Maple Ridge on 227th Street.

Karl Marc Cantera, 31, faces charges of kidnapping, armed robbery, robbery, using a weapon in commission of an offence, theft, assault causing bodily harm, assault, escape custody, and failing to abide by a court order.

Cantera, of Maple Ridge, appeared in Port Coquitlam provincial court Monday and was remanded in custody.

Police also have sent a weapon said to be used in the offences to the RCMP firearms lab to see if it actually meets the legal definition of a firearm.

Spokesperson Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said in a release that the investigation is complex and crimes involving people, “are a top priority with Ridge Meadows RCMP.”
