A 29-year-old Courtenay man remains in custody after a taxi driver fled his vehicle early Saturday morning, fearing for his safety.

Just before 4:30 a.m., the Comox Valley RCMP received a

request for assistance from a local taxi company. One of their driver’s cars had been stolen and the taxi driver was now on foot near Dingwall Road and Highway 19A in Courtenay.

The driver fled from the car, as he believed his passenger was about to rob him of his money. The suspect then climbed into the driver’s seat and drove away in the taxi.

The cab driver was not physically injured. The stolen car was

later located and a man turned himself into the Comox Valley RCMP on Saturday evening.

This man remains in custody and is facing possible charges of robbery and theft over $5,000.
