Man killed in Maple Ridge go-kart crash

Fatal crash between a go-kart and pickup truck on 256th Street in east Maple Ridge.

A man is dead after the go-kart he was riding collided with a pickup truck Wednesday afternoon in east Maple Ridge.

The crash occurred just before 1 p.m. on 256th Street at 124th Avenue.

Ridge Meadows RCMP Sgt. Dale Somerville said the truck towing a trailer was traveiling north on 256th Street, while the go-kart was heading west down 124th Avenue.

The unlicensed go-kart may have come out into traffic, he added.

It slammed into the back of the trailer, which was loaded with all-terrain vehicles.

“It appears the driver of the truck, towing the trailer, knew nothing of the impact other than he felt it at the last minute,” said Somerville.

“This is a very tragic incident.”

RCMP shut down the street to investigate and interviewed several witnesses at the scene.

Police are trying to determine whether the driver failed to stop at the intersection.

The go-kart driver, a 33-year-old father who lives in Webster’s Corner, was rushed to hospital but has since died from his injuries.

Police said his name is being withheld at this time.

The B.C. Coroner’s Service is also investigating the fatal crash.
