A man who jumped up and down on the roof of a sports car Sunday has been arrested.

RCMP said the 41-year-old Maple Ridge man was sitting on the roof of the vandalized Saleen Mustang when they arrived.

RCMP got the call to 224th Street and North Road at about 3 p.m. Police learned that the man had been jumping on top of the car, without provocation, just moments before.

As soon as the man realized police were on scene, he got off the roof of the car and fled. Responding officers located the suspect and took him into custody. He was held in custody for a court appearance on Monday.

A photo shows the roof of the vehicle substantially dented.

“The suspect is very well known to Ridge Meadows RCMP, and is a person who exhibits unstable mental health,” said Sgt. Jennifer Hyland.

“Police across the province have received training in de-escalating persons exhibiting odd behaviour, but these cases can become violent depending on the person, or persons, involved,” she added.

“Thankfully the arrest of this suspect took place without any physical force having to be used.”

Purse recovered

Police would like to speak with a woman who had her purse snatched so she can help them identify the culprit.

At about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23 a woman had her purse stolen from her grocery cart in the parking lot of the Meadowtown Shopping Mall in Pitt Meadows.

She called for help, and other people in the mall parking lot came to her assistance, chasing the thief. He dropped the purse and fled the scene.

The victim got her purse back and left the parking lot.

After her departure, Ridge Meadows RCMP located a person who may be responsible for the theft, and now need the victim to call them at 604-463-6251 and quote File No. 2014-15418.
