Man who was once deported from Canada, arrested at border

The man reportedly also told authorities he was going to commit suicide.

American authorities arrested a 56-year-old man at the Pacific Highway border crossing this month, after Canadian border guards learned of his criminal past.

The man, a Portuguese national, was flagged on July 7 by Canadian officers who found he had previously been deported from Canada “due to his extensive criminal record and narcotics abuse,” according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The man reportedly also told authorities he was going to commit suicide.

His criminal record in Canada consists of 33 convictions, including narcotics possession and trafficking, assault on an officer, theft, breaking and entering with intent, as well as driving under the influence, according to authorities.

The arrest took place more than a week after the man entered the U.S. at Logan International Airport in Boston on June 29.

Following his arrest, the man, who was receiving methadone treatment, was transported to hospital for evaluation before being transported to Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma.
