It’s never too early to sing O Canada and Sidney Town Crier Kenny Podmore is hoping a lot of people think the same way.
On April, 30, Podmore is organizing a mass singing of the country’s national anthem for a video recording project to have for Canada’s 150th birthday party on July 1.
He’s looking for as many people as possible to come to Sidney’s Beacon Park (at the bandshell on the waterfront) where there will be a couple rehearsal renditions of O Canada — followed by the real deal on video.
“Just show up,” Podmore said.
Music director Anne-Marie Brimacombe will lead the performance and James Green will record the singing. Everyone, said Podmore, is doing the work as volunteers. The Sidney Business Improvement Area Society has come on board as sponsor, he said.
Podmore added the mass sing video will help celebrate Canada Day this year and he hopes the effort — and a lot of singers — has Sidney leading the way on the nation’s 150th anniversary this summer. As well, he said, it could spark other communities to make grand gestures of their own.
Anyone wanting to join in can show up at Beacon Park April 30 at 2 p.m.
