More than 180 people were evacuated after an inferno at a large apartment complex at 108 Avenue and King George Boulevard on Wednesday.
Crews were called to the 253-unit complex at 10838 City Parkway at about 6 a.m.
Fire ripped through several suites and then to the roof of the massive complex.
It was a three-alarm fire with 30 firefighters in all.
There are no reports of injuries at the four-storey complex, and the entire building was safely evacuated, and at least one person was rescued from a balcony.
Surrey’s general manager of parks, recreation and culture Laurie Cavan said the city enacted a level 2 Emergency Social Services Wednesday morning and relocated 186 people from 79 units to six local hotels.
Cavan said people are understandably shaken, but are being looked after.
“It’s a very stressful and traumatic situation for people,” Cavan said. “We’ve been doing our very best to make sure everybody is comfortable and has a place to stay.”
The complex, called Access, was built in 2005, and was marketed as a Yaletown-style development in the heart of Surrey.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
