Local contractor Stuart McLean has announced his candidacy for RDN Director of Area H (Shaw Hill, Deep Bay, Bowser).

The 33-year-old was born and raised in the RDN rural areas and has been a resident of Area H for the past six years. An active member of the community, he is a volunteer firefighter and first responder with the Deep Bay Fire Department and sits on the Deep Bay Improvement District fire hall replacement committee.

McLean says that he is committed to listening to the community and representing their interests.

“My motivation to run came from seeing genuine frustration in the community over not feeling informed or listened to.”

He said he believes his open, collaborative, community-based approach will set a new standard.

The position of RDN director is also an exciting personal challenge for Stuart who says he’s eager to explore and develop new skills after years as a tradesperson.

Some of his key priorities include:

Challenging any attempt to release sewage or other waste into the Salish Sea; introducing live streamed RDN board meetings; monthly open meeting availability with constituents; examining the Area H OCP regarding density transfers, cluster development and the effects on the rural character of the region; and consulting with the community to determine which amenities are most desired, such as: indoor recreation space, green space with playground and adult exercise equipment in Bowser core, beach front regional park, secondary boat launch, electric vehicle charging station, expanded community trails.

His campaign website can be found at www.Area-H.ca

Area H residents can email Stuart with ideas, questions or concerns at stuart@area-h.ca
