Every Friday afternoon W.L. McLeod sends over 40 students home for the weekend carrying bags filled with nourishing food items; two breakfasts, lunches, dinners, fruits, and dairy snacks to enjoy on their own or share with family.
Every week it’s a different healthy selection of fresh fruit, plus rozen portions from entrees made at the Farm to School hot lunch program. Extra muffins or cookies from the lunch program are also be added to the weekend back pack meals and the process is repeated for 38 weekends during the school year.
The program started two years ago, in the spring of 2016, and has continued thanks to the support of student, staff and parent volunteers who fill the bags for the back pack program and the very generous donations of funds and food items from many community organisations, businesses and private donors.
“At W.L. McLeod we are focusing on growing our brains, our hearts and our bodies but we know that it’s hard to grow when your tummy is hungry. Thank you Vanderhoof for supporting kids in our community!” says Principal Libby Hart.
