Corporal Jamie Moffat is the newest member of the Nakusp RCMP.
She recently sat down with Arrow Lakes News to tell the community a little bit about herself.
How long have you been a member of the RCMP?
16 years.
What got you interested in the job?
Wanting to help people living in small communities. I grew up in small communities and I love the fact that you can be so involved and get into different things. It just seemed like a good job where you could entail a lot of different things, with people helping and contributing, and all the fun that goes with being a police officer.
Where have you lived previously?
I’ve been in Chilliwack, Kelowna, Dease Lake, Tumbler Ridge, and then here.
How did you hear about Nakusp?
We were in Kelowna for quite a few years, and I’ve done the Cops for Kids Ride through the Kootenays a couple of times, and I’ve loved the area, so when a position came up here we applied for it and were successful in getting it and are very happy to be in the area.
When did you get here?
My first day here was on the 20th. We got here on the Wednesday (March 15), so I had the weekend to kind of hang out before I started.
What’s been your impression of the community so far?
It’s amazing, it’s beautiful. People are very friendly and welcoming, everywhere I go they’re just putting themselves out there and saying ‘hi,’ and it’s a great feeling, and it’s nice to have all the small independent businesses in town, and the great restaurants, it’s a treat.
Is there anything you’re finding surprising about the village?
Nothing so far. It’s a very welcoming community, and it’s nice. Usually the smaller ones are very open armed and make you feel welcome, it’s nice.
What are you looking forward to about working here in Nakusp?
Just the experience. Everywhere you go it’s a different policing experience from small town to small town, and just being able to be involved and getting good relationships with people here in the community and hopefully work together and problem solve anything that we can, and just make a good relationship.
How long will you be posted here?
Three years.
It’s you and your family?
Yes. I have a husband and we have three children, 12, ten and three, and they’re all looking forward to starting school. It’s quite exciting for them, moving in the middle of the school year.
