Memorial for Vernon councillor confirmed

Gathering place in Polson Park will pay tribute to Patrick Nicol

Patrick Nicol loved Polson Park and bringing people together, and now those two components will form a lasting tribute for the former Vernon councillor.

City council voted Monday to provide up to $10,000 for a memorial in Polson Park for Nicol, who died in January.

“It will be called Patrick’s Gathering Place,” said Coun. Juliette Cunningham, who led the committee that considered how Nicol should be recognized for his 22 years of elected office and volunteer activities.

The memorial will consist of seating and a plaque on a large rock. It will be located near the checker board area by the bandshell, where Nicol presided over Canada Day festivities for decades.

“It’s modest but meaningful,” said Cunningham of the design.

“Patrick wouldn’t want anything over the top.”

Patrick’s Gathering Place will be unveiled July 1, Canada Day.
