Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Course celebrates its 100th anniversary this year and events marking this celebration are scheduled throughout the summer.
It starts Friday with the opening of the new green and unveiling for the fairway name of Hole #3 at 2 pm. The original green was the oldest on the course but was suffering from root damage from the adjacent trees. Local dignitaries and golfers in period dress, plus fours and long skirts and period hats will be in attendance. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
Memorial Golf Course opened in 1913 and is the fourth oldest course in B.C. The original owner was General Noel Money. Arthur Macan designed the course. The original design was for 18 holes but that plan was reduced to 9 in 1919 and the last nine holes were never built. The Town of Qualicum Beach purchased the golf course in 1981 for $1 million. The town is still the proud owner of the golf course.
Notable personalities to who have played the course include the King Of Siam, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Ernie Bentley, Zane Grey, Lord Byng, Lord Bessborough, Lord Willington, Lord Tweedsmuir and Vincent Massey to name just a few.
