Where’s the beef?

Well, it’s not exactly where’s the beef, but more where’s the barbecue?

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) in Vernon prepares five nutritious meals per week and serves between 35 to 45 people lunch.

“Being that it’s summer time everyone likes a great barbecue meal and our barbecue has cooked its last burger” said Chris Harms, head cook.

Last week, Harms and his volunteers went to roll out the barbecue and it collapsed into fragments.

CMHA is a charitable organization that fundraises for services, programs and resources for people affected by mental illness.

“Unfortunately, our budget doesn’t allow for us to go out and purchase a new barbecue and it’s such an uplifting way to bring people together for a hot summer meal,” said Sue Rossi, executive director.

A purchase of a new barbecue that can withstand the test of time would be around $600.

Ideally, the barbecue would need a good-size grill and a solid frame, as the last barbecue worked lunch duty for 10 summers’ lunches and a variety of picnics.

If you would like to help CMHA purchase a new barbecue with a small dedicated donation, they can provide a charitable tax receipt.

CMHA is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at 3100 28th Avenue in Vernon.

To find out more information about CMHA, consider coming out to the AGM on Sept. 23 at 5 p.m. and have a tour with some light refreshments.  All of the programs will be on display with CMHA staff handy to answer any of your questions.  This is a free event, and who knows, the association might even have a barbecue appetizer.
