Despite all the rain in recent days, watering restrictions in Delta and the rest of the Lower Mainland go into effect today.

Stage 1 of Metro Vancouver’s water shortage response plan, which aims to conserve drinking water during the summer months, starts on May 15 and applies to all properties in Delta. Watering restrictions are expected to remain in effect until Oct. 15.

“Water demand always goes up in the summer, which is also when we get the least rain,” said Darrell Mussatto, chair of Metro Vancouver’s utilities committee. “Reducing lawn watering has consistently proven to be an effective way to conserve water and lessen the strain on the region’s water transmission system.”

Residential lawn watering for those with even-numbered addresses is only allowed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 4 to 9 a.m.

Watering for odd-numbered addresses is only allowed on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, also from 4 to 9 a.m.

Non-residential properties with even-numbered addresses may water on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 6 a.m., while odd-numbered addresses must wait until Tuesdays and Thursdays, also from 1 to 6 a.m.

All non-residential addresses may water on Friday mornings between 4 and 9 a.m.

“A wet spring and a snowy winter isn’t an excuse to waste our drinking water in Metro Vancouver,” Mussatto added. “These regulations are in place to help residents develop long-term habits for drier years.”
