After serving eight years as mayor and many more as a village councillor, Midway mayor Randy Kappes has resigned effective Aug. 2 citing personal reasons.
At a regular meeting of council on Aug. 2, Kappes added his resignation letter as a late item to the agenda.
“My position as mayor is having a negative effect on my health, family and business and I find I am no longer able to perform to standards that I feel are acceptable,” Kappes wrote. “I thank the residents of Midway for their many years of support and wish them a prosperous future.”
Chief administrative officer Penny Feist said his resignation will trigger a byelection, and council will appoint a chief elections officer (CEO) to oversea the byelection. The byelection will take place within 80 days of the appointment of the CEO.
Kappes served as mayor for eight years, and as village councillor for the previous six years. He was elected to his current four-year term in 2014, and resigns with two years remaining on his term.
Councillor Darrin Metcalf will be acting mayor until the end of August, followed by Councillor Richard Dunsdon for the quarter following. The schedule for acting mayors is determined by council at the begining of the year, and changes each quarter.
