Three fire hydrants in the Valley have been tampered with causing concern for police and firefighters.

On May 18, three very dangerous mischief incidents were reported to the Comox Valley RCMP, as three fire hydrants in North Courtenay had been tampered with in under a week.

Two hydrants, one located near Wentworth Road and Exeter Place, and the other behind Costco, were opened and left running, causing the loss of thousands of liters of water.

The third one, on Veterans Memorial Parkway, appeared to have been tampered with, but was not running.

Police note there is the obvious safety issue of a fire department arriving at a fire and having to deal with a hydrant that may have damaged, but there is also another implication – the loss of water. The Comox Valley is likely heading into its fourth year of drought-like conditions, and losing thousands of liters of water can be very devastating to the community as a whole, they add.

The Comox Valley RCMP are looking for any witnesses or if anyone has any information regarding these mischief incidents, to please call 250-338-1321, or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)
