Missing man found safe in Grindrod area

Search and Rescue crews reunite senior with his family

Update 9:40 a.m.

A missing Grindrod man has been located safe and sound.

Search and Rescue crews found the 75-year-old man just after 9 a.m. Wednesday 25 kilometres up Zeddergreen Road, which is six kilometres north of Grindrod.

“He’s just a little tired,” said Leigh Pearson, with Vernon Search and Rescue, adding that temperatures dropped overnight.

“He has been delivered back to his family and everyone is happy.”

The man was out with a friend checking out salt-licks for cattle Tuesday when they became separated at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. Search and Rescue was called out just after 5 p.m. and the search, which included the RCMP, continued until 3 a.m. Wednesday.

The search resumed Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. with assistance from Search and Rescue units from Salmon Arm and Kamloops.

The man was located 600 metres from where he had last been seen.

“It’s a pretty rugged area and it’s hard to maneuver around,” said Pearson of the geography.

Search and Rescue first responded to reports of a 77-year-old man lost on Park Mountain near Enderby just after 5 p.m. Tuesday. The concern at the time was that temperatures were dropping.

As of 6:35 a.m. Wednesday, Search and Rescue was regrouping to continue the search for the man in an area 25 kilometres up Zeddergreen Road, which is six kilometres north of Grindrod.

“He was with a friend checking out salt-licks for the cattle in the area and when the friend returned to the vehicle at the meet-up time, he was missing,” states a Search and Rescue press release.

“The friend stayed with the vehicle for some time and when he did not return, he contacted the RCMP. The male is familiar with the area as he has been going to the same area for approximately 10 years.”

Along with Search and Rescue, RCMP dog handlers and a police helicopter are on scene.
