Richard Blair Young, 72, was reported missing to Victoria police last month, but has now been identified as the victim of a homicide.

Richard Blair Young, 72, was reported missing to Victoria police last month, but has now been identified as the victim of a homicide.

The search for a 72-year-old Victoria man missing since early February has come to a tragic close with the identification of human remains discovered earlier this month near the Malahat summit.

Those remains, recovered March 3, have since been identified as Richard Blair Young, who had not been seen or heard from since Feb. 7, causing his family concern. About a week later, he was reported missing to Victoria police.

Police are treating Young’s death as a homicide, but have not released the cause of death as the investigation continues.

“The death of Mr. Young is tragic and our thoughts are with his family,” said Island district RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Tammy Douglas. “We are asking those individuals who have information about his death to come forward.”

Police said there is nothing to suggest the public is at risk. Anyone with information is asked to call the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIMCU) at 250-380-6211 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
