May is High Risk Driving Awareness Month in B.C. and ICBC wants to remind drivers to drive defensively, especially during the holiday weekend.
Mission RCMP were out in full force on Thursday as part of Project Swoop, a high risk driving campaign. Officers were set up on Lougheed Highway checking for speeders and distracted drivers.
According to ICBC, almost half (43 per cent) of all crashes that result in injury or death involve high-risk driving like speeding or failing to yield.
Slow down and be realistic about travel times to reduce your risk of crashing. Give yourself extra time to get to your destination so you don’t feel the need to rush.
Slow down on wet roads, in bad weather conditions, or on uneven roads and increase your following distance to at least four seconds.
“Speed is still the number one cause of crashes and then distracted driving and number three now is impaired,” said Don Miller, ICBC road safety coordinator for Mission and Abbotsford.
“Every year, on average, 94 people are killed in speed related crashes in B.C.”
Fifty per cent of those crashes happen on a weekend.
