North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice has officially declared her intent to run for re-election in the 2017 provincial election.

North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice has officially declared her intent to run for re-election in the 2017 provincial election.

The incumbent MLA was first elected in May 2013 and served as the NDP spokesperson for northern and rural health and deputy spokesperson for children and family development.

Most recently, she took on the role as spokesperson for northern and rural economic development.

Rice has been known to speak up for testing and monitoring lead levels in school drinking water, for bringing a shuttle bus to Highway 16 and for wheelchair accessibility on BC Ferries.

“I have been a really good advocate,” Rice said on The Northern View This Week podcast on Feb. 1.

Despite being the official opposition, Rice said she personally has been able to make change.

“We have testing across British Columbia in the schools for lead levels in their drinking water, and through my advocacy I revealed that a lot of schools in B.C. have elevated lead levels beyond the recommended guidelines and now schools are taking action to deal with that.”
