A proposed home expansion and monorail in Okanagan Landing is generating a lot of debate.
Vernon council issued a development variance permit Monday to allow for the construction of a tram and house addition within 15 metres of Okanagan Lake at 8810 Adventure Bay Road.
However, some neighbours are not happy.
“I will not be able to see the lake because of how they raised the roof,” said resident Petra Nielsen, who is also upset over plans for the monorail or tram.
“This is a beautiful area on the point and to be scarred by a ramp would be a shame. It seems like a large footprint in the protected area with all of the stairs in one area and a ramp in a different area.”
However, the applicant defended the monorail.
“There is one two doors down already,” said Ken Dahlen, with Keith Dahlen Construction.
“They are commonly done around lakes.”
In terms of roof lines and the monorail, Dahlen said, “To say we’re impacting views, I’m not sure how that’s happening because it’s already impacted. There’s a wall there.”
The only opposition among council to issuing the development variance permit came from Coun. Juliette Cuningham.
“We have concerned residents about a higher peak so it’s difficult to make a decision,” she said.
