Police are now knocking on doors and evacuating people in more of the areas previously under evacuation alert in Peachland.
Kelowna Capital News reporters on the ground say police are currently knocking on doors along 1 Avenue in Peachland; although news from the regional district states segments of the highway are also being re-opened.
“The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure advises that Highway 97 is once again open to two way traffic from Princeton Avenue to Glenrosa Road. Highway 97-C, the Okanagan Connector, is also open to traffic,” states the news release sent out at 8:50 p.m. Sunday evening.
The release goes on to say there has been overwhelming support from people offering large horse hauling trailers, though they are not needed as yet.
Anyone willing to help can register with Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team at either Emergency Support Services reception centre in the Westbank Lions Community Centre or the Summerland Arena and Curling Club.
The curling club is in Summerland, 8820 Jubilee Road East, and the Lions Community Centre is at 2466 Main Street in West Kelowna.
It’s estimated that 1,550 people are affected by the evacuation orders. Residents with animals are asked to bring them to their nearest reception centre and they will be assisted by representatives of the CDART.
It’s estimated that 832 people are on evacuation alert; although it is unclear how many of the individuals listed as on evacuation alert are currently being upgraded by police.
