IT MAY not be officially announced yet, but the Rio Tinto Alcan’s $2.5 billion Kitimat smelter rebuild project is all but a sure thing following an advisory today of two contract signings tomorrow.
One is for the first phase work on the construction camp needed to house the hundreds of workers who will be brought in for the project and the other is to demolish Potlines 7 and 8 to make room for the new smelter.
The signings take place tomorrow at 3 pm at the Kitimat Valley Institute in Kitimat.
ATCO Structures and Logistics has been awarded the contract to build the first phase of the camp while the potline cleaning and demolition contract has been awarded to a two company joint venture – Quantum Murray, and NW Demolition Canada.
An announcement making the rebuild project official is expected later this year.
