More suspicious fires break out in Vernon

Two vehicles sustain significant damage on Tronson Road early Saturday morning

The number of arson fires continues to grow in Vernon.

Firefighters were called to the 6000 block of Tronson Road at about 1 a.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, they found an older motorhome that had been set ablaze and an adjacent pickup truck that had suffered exposure damage.

“They gained access to the compound and knocked it down,” said Jack Blair, Vernon deputy fire chief.

This is believed to be the 18th suspicious fire in the Greater Vernon area in about a month.

“These are very difficult to investigate,” said Blair, adding that evidence is not always readily available.

It’s not known if all of the cases are the result of one individual or if several people are responsible.

The concern among firefighters and the RCMP is the magnitude of the arsons may escalate and public safety could be put at risk.

“If there is anything people see that may be unusual, please call 911 right away,” said Blair.
