Moss in a flower pot was the culprit in a fire Saturday at the old bowling alley building in Chase.

The Chase Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to 734 First Ave., after calls came in around 4 p.m. reporting a structure fire. Fire crews were notified of flames and a puff of smoke coming from the roof. Crews were able to locate the fire and quickly extinguish it.

Chase Fire Chief Brent Chamberlain, said the fire was caused by external combustion after the sun caused moss in a flower pot to catch on fire.

Chamberlain says the only damage to the building was a small hole burned through the roof where the pot had been sitting.

“The crew had to make the hole a little bigger to determine there were no longer any flames inside the roof but that is the extent of the damage,” said Chamberlain.
