A motorcycle rider was airlifted to hospital with severe injuries after his bike was split in half in a head-on crash on Highway 10 in Surrey.

According to freelance reporter Shane MacKichan, the motorcycle was heading east on Highway 10, and trying to pass a vehicle, when it crossed into the oncoming lane and struck a minivan around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The crash closed Highway 10 in both directions, and Surrey RCMP said in a tweet the road could remain shut down for several hours while the investigation continues.

The rider was ejected at least 30 feet, according to MacKichan, and taken to Royal Columbian Hospital.

The highway was closed from 180 to 184 Street.
