Courtenay’s Anderton Avenue will be the site of road repairs next week.
Starting Monday, April 15, the City of Courtenay public works will be repairing asphalt on Anderton between Fifth Street and First Street daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The work is expected to last until Friday, April 19, weather permitting.
James Nixon, the City’s assistant manager of roads and parks, advised that drivers should expect delays.
“We’d really appreciate if drivers could use alternate routes if at all possible, particularly on Thursday and Friday, when we plan to be repaving the intersection at First Street and Anderton Avenue,” he says. “We’re asking everyone to watch for flag personnel and posted signs.”
During construction, Anderton Avenue will be reduced to single-lane vehicle traffic with intermittent closures. Crews and equipment will generate noise in the area. The City apologizes for any inconvenience.
Delays will impact vehicles wishing to cross the Condensory Bridge, as they must pass through the First Street and Anderton Avenue intersection on the south side of the bridge.
During construction, the bus stop on Anderton Avenue will be temporarily closed. Transit users will be redirected to the bus stop at Fourth Street and Cliffe Avenue, next to the Courtenay Museum.
Sidewalks will remain open for pedestrians. Vehicles parked in the area during construction times will be towed.
The City is delivering notices about the project to area residents and businesses. Anderton Avenue is home to the Florence Filberg Centre recreation facility.
Susan Murphy, manager of recreation services, said they are working to notify facility users.
“We’re posting signs up at the Filberg and Lewis Centres for the benefit of our daytime programs and Evergreen Club activities,” she says. “We are encouraging drivers to use the upper parking lot so they can avoid Anderton. Fortunately our facility rentals are all in the evening, so they shouldn’t be impacted.”
The City thanks area residents and commuters for their understanding and patience during the road work.
