A 20-person unit crew, three officers and two helicopters spent the day fighting the Mount Midgely fire northwest of Creston. The fire remains at 600 hectares, a size estimated around 10 a.m., and suppression will continue tomorrow.
“It hasn’t grown in a while,” Southeast Fire Centre information officer Fanny Bernard reported this evening, just after crews finished for the day.
Cooler temperatures and some overnight rain, she said, likely kept it from growing even larger, and it is not threatening homes or communications towers on the mountain.
She warned residents, though, that caution is still needed and the region remains under fire restrictions that prohibit campfires, tiki torches, fireworks and barrel burning.
“These fires grow fact,” she said. “Fuels are staying dry, and even though the fire rating for the Creston area is moderate, it could bounce back quickly. It’s important that people not be complacent. …
“We’re not done with summer yet.”
