Mountain bike groups gain mayor’s esteem

The Cariboo Mountain Bike Consortium (CMBC) is seeking municipal funding

The Cariboo Mountain Bike Consortium (CMBC) is seeking municipal funding for maintaining its new 99 Mile and 108 Mile Ranch trail networks.

The mountain bike group approached the District of 100 Mile House at its Oct. 11 council meeting with a slideshow presentation.

Mayor Mitch Campsall says the request was forwarded to the Oct. 17 South Cariboo Joint Committee (SCJC) meeting, due to its public recreational values, to tie in with the Cariboo Regional District.

“All of council was excited about what [the bike clubs] have done in the community … and the progress that they’ve made,” notes Campsall.

The local Hun City Mountain Bike Club participated with the regional Cariboo Mountain Bike Consortium to establish a network of mountain bike-specific trails at 108 Mile Ranch and 99 Mile.

The mayor sits on the SCJC, and he explains the project was “well received” by the committee.

“I’m definitely pleased, when we’ve got volunteers doing the work that they’re doing and the effort they’re putting in, it’s fantastic to see what’s being done.”

The mountain bike clubs have provided a lot of mentorship and practical help to the younger riders in the community, he adds.

“I think somehow we’ve got to figure a way to expand on it and get the community more involved.”
