Mounties cracking down on dangerous drivers

A May blitz on King George Boulevard is being planned to reduce accidents on the corridor.

Mounties cracking down on dangerous drivers

Throughout this month, the Surrey RCMP will be cracking down on drivers along the King George corridor in anticipation of what is a dangerous month on the roads.

During May last year, the Surrey RCMP responded to 33 collisions along King George Boulevard, some of them involving serious injuries.

This year, Surrey RCMP Traffic Services and their partners from the Fraser Valley Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU) will be “lighting up” King George Boulevard by increasing their presence along the corridor.

People on the road can expect to see several enforcement operations targeting aggressive, distracted and impaired drivers, as well as pedestrian infractions, such as jay-walking.

“We hope this increased vigilance of drivers and pedestrians alike will assist us in reducing the number of collisions on this busy strip of roadway,”  Surrey RCMP Traffic Services Sgt. Gary Clarke said in a release.

“The warmer weather and longer days usually see a rise in accidents, so we are taking a proactive approach in order to remind all drivers and pedestrians to be extra careful.”

With the end of the school year coming soon, more children are out playing near the roadways.

Making more time to get to your destination is very important.

“Driving is a complex task that requires your full dedicated attention,” said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet.

“Distracted driving will definitely be a focus, but we will enforce all infractions that jeopardize our community’s safety.”
