Mounties host Lantzville town hall meeting

NANAIMO – Nanaimo RCMP to bring Lantville residents up to speed on current and future policing in community.

Nanaimo RCMP are hosting a town hall meeting at Costin Hall in Lantzville to discuss a five-year policing plan for the community.

Officers with the General Investigation Section will also discuss break and enters, and thefts from vehicles in Lantzville, which homes and vehicles are being targeted, and ways residents can protect themselves.

Police will also talk about drugs and marijuana grow operations, including medicinal grow ops and recent changes to legislation regarding them, plus a presentation on the Block Watch program.

“It’s very important to keep people in the fold and let them know where we’re going with policing,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman and the meeting’s facilitator.

Following the meeting, police will stick around for coffee and private conversations to hear residents’ individual concerns.

“More importantly, at the end, is to have a cup of coffee and shoot the bull and find out what’s going on with people,” O’Brien said. “That’s when you really find out what’s going on because a lot of people aren’t comfortable talking in front of 100 people. They want to have a cup of coffee and share some concerns with their local policeman and that’s what I’m looking forward to.”

The meeting happens Wednesday (June 19) 7-8:30 p.m.
