Mounties warn about door-to-door scam artist

NANAIMO – Woman going door to door trying to con her way into homes to commit thefts.

  • Jun. 24, 2013 8:00 a.m.

Nanaimo Mounties are warning the public about a woman going door to door to con her way into homes to steal small items.

The suspect might ask for directions or attempt to pose as a caregiver, social worker or nurse.

The most recent incident occurred on Tuesday at about 4:45 p.m. in the 400 block of Milton Street when the female came to the door asking directions to get to Townsite Road. She was left alone for a few moments and during that time a wallet went missing.

The same suspect is believed to have been involved in a incident May 16 on the 500 block of Terminal Avenue. The woman told the home owners she was in town for a job interview, she said her son had recently been in a car accident and she had lost her wallet and had no money. When she asked the skeptical homeowners if they could give her some money they refused and called the police. The woman left before the police arrived.

Police believe the same female also targeted central Nanaimo homes for several weeks in 2012 when she managed to steal several wallets, jewelry and cash.

The suspect is Caucasian, in her mid 30s, has a thin build and shoulder length, brown hair. Police say she is extremely manipulative and highly unpredictable.

Anyone approached by her is asked to call 911 immediately.

Anyone who has information about the suspect is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com.
