North Okanagan-Shuswap MP Colin Mayes turned 65 in April, but he’s not quite ready to collect his MP pension yet.

“I haven’t made my decision whether I’m going to run for re-election in two-and-a-half years; it’s one of the things I’m considering.”

There is no rule regarding when an MP must retire. The oldest MP is Ray Boughen from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, who is 76.

“My  kids would like to see me home, and my wife says, ‘I think you’re too young to retire.’ I appreciate that,” says Mayes.

He notes that his parliamentary committee is studying older workers in the workplace – specifically 55 and older.

“There was a gospel of Freedom 55. Is it realistic and do people really want to retire at 55? That could give you 45 years of being retired. That’s more years of being retired than working.”
