MP Wayne Stetski will be in Revelstoke later this month as part of his Summer Democratic Reform tour through the Kootenay-Columbia riding.
Stetski will seek feedback from constituents at Conversations coffee shop on Thursday, Aug. 18, from 2–3 p.m.
The visit is part of a 14 community tour of the riding he’s taking to get feedback on changing Canada’s electoral system.
“In the last two federal elections, parties that only received 39 per cent of the vote formed a majority government with 100 per cent of the power — this is not a fair system,” said Stetski in a news release. “The current government has promised to make changes, but those changes need to reflect the desires of Canadians across the country, not just the interests of the party in power. It is important for me to hear from the people of Kootenay-Columbia on this important issue so I can take your views back to Ottawa.”
Stetski’s tour begins on Tuesday, Aug. 9, with meetings in Fernie and Sparwood. He will also visit Kimberley, Cranbrook, Creston, Salmo, Ymir, Nelson, Kaslo, Meadow Creek, Golden, Spillimacheen and Invermere.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made electoral reform part of the government’s agenda. In May he announced the formation of a 12-member committee consisting of five Liberals, three Conservatives, two NDP, one Bloc Quebecois and Green MP Elizabeth May.
“Canada has been using its current electoral system since before the invention of the automobile, and there is a broad consensus that changes need to be made” stated Stetski. “I encourage everyone across our region to join me and be a part of this important conversation about strengthening our democracy.”
