Municipal and Civic elections coming up October 20

Nomination period is from 9 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 4, to 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 14

The District of Barriere Mayor and Council, the Thompson Nicola Regional District Board, and School District 73 Trustee positions are all up for election in October of this year.

Some of the people who have served will be letting their name stand again, and some will be stepping back.

Serving your community can be a rewarding experience. There are many good reasons to run for office—you might run to be actively involved in the local decision-making process, contribute your experience and knowledge to the community, address issues or lead change in your community.

Municipalities and regional districts hold elections every four years for approximately 1,650 elected official positions in 250 jurisdictions across B.C. Over 3,300 candidates run for positions including mayor, councillor and regional district electoral area director.

These elected officials are entrusted with making decisions that directly affect the daily lives of residents, families, local business owners and many others in the local community.

If you’re thinking of running for local office part of the decision-making process may include considering the role you will play, how best you can serve your community and the impact you will have as an elected official.

Before making the decision to run for local office, it’s important to think about how you can best serve your community if you are elected.

District of Barriere CAO, Colleen Hannigan, advises, “The General Local Elections are approaching this fall (October 20) and Candidate Information Packages are now available online at www.barriere.ca or at the District of Barriere offices at 4936 Barriere Town Road. There will also be a few on hand at the District table at the North Thompson Fall Fair on Labour Day weekend.”

The nomination period is from 9 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 4, to 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 14.
