Fans of backyard firework displays will have the sizzle taken out of their sparklers with a new municipal bylaw banning the sale of fireworks and firecrackers in the Town of Princeton.
While it has long been illegal to set off fireworks in town limits, they now can no longer be purchased following passing of the bylaw Monday night.
The new law gives the bylaw enforcement officer the ability to fine offenders between $200 and $300.
CAO Rick Zerr said banning the sale of fireworks is “a safety issue…we often are at the highest level of fire warning.”
In a related move town council also passed a bylaw introducing a $200 fine for discharging firearms or bows in town limits.
Previously fireworks and firearms violations could only be enforced under the Offence Act in Supreme Court, a lengthy and costly process.
