Nakusp Elementary School receives funding to replace roof

Highlights from the regular School Board Meeting of May 31.

School District 10 has learned $259,284 in capital project funding has been approved by the Ministry of Education to replace the roof at Nakusp Elementary School.The roof is in the worst condition of any in the district, and will greatly benefit from replacement, which would include better insulation. Replacing the roof would also mean enhanced energy efficiency for the building.

 

School district welcomes new employees

Lucerne Elementary Secondary School (LESS) will be getting a new principal. Nick Graves will be coming to the community of New Denver in July of 2017. He has worked as a principal in China at a BC offshore school for three years, and was teacher in Bella Coola for two years, and then became principal in the same community for two years.

In the meantime Trish Hawkins, retired principal, will take over for the 2016/2017 school year as acting principal.

Edgewood Elementary School (EES) will also welcoming new staff. Mike Hibberson will be the new vice principal and intermediate teacher. His most recent post was as a teacher and curriculum coordinator in Brunei.

 

NSS Senior Girls head to soccer provincials

The senior girls soccer team recently won a berth at the Soccer Provincial Championships. They will be travelling to Prince George for the tournament, which takes place from June 1-4.

 

Track and field team shines in zone tournament

The track team took part in the Kootenay Zone tournament in Cranbrook on May 16. Five members of the team took home medals.

Kiley Waterfield: First in 800 m, second in 400 m, and third

in 1500 m

Broden McLean: Second in shot put, third in discus

Lliam Frederick-Chivers: Third in 1500 m

Maria Vazquez: Third in 200 m

Garrett Waterfield: Fourth in triple jump

 

Edgewood Elementary School teacher wins award

Erika Momeyer, a teacher at Edgewood Elementary School (EES), has been named winner of the Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network (CBEEN). Momeyer was recognized for her long-term dedication and passion as a teacher. Momeyer has developed “Walking Wednesdays” at EES, which has evolved into a wonderful example of inquiry-based experimental environmental learning.

 

SD 10 takes part in NOII Symposium

Nine teachers from School District 10 are involved in action research inquiry projects for the Network of Inquiry and Innovation (NOII). Two of the teachers attended this year’s NOII symposium.

The teachers engaged in the spiral of inquiry to identify a focus for their teaching, examine the impact of changing practices, and report on the impact for their students.

Superintendent Terry Taylor, along with University of Victoria professor, Dr. Catherine McGregor presented on the cross-province ‘Inquiring Districts’ research. Fifteen districts are researching district practices and examining the impact on student learning.
