City of Nanaimo emergency support services volunteers have been called upon by Emergency Management British Columbia to support evacuees from Lytton and other areas in the Interior impacted by wildfires.

The team will provide a remote service to help evacuees with registration on the provincial emergency registration system and guide them to sources of support and current information.

The ESS team is recognized provincially as a leader in using the online provincial registration system and for developing a virtual response model for COVID-19, according to a City of Nanaimo press release. The city says its emergency support services team “continually explores methods to modernize and streamline their ability to respond.”

ESS volunteers train to prepare for emergencies and have provided support to residents displaced by emergencies both in Nanaimo and in other communities.

“The City of Nanaimo ESS volunteers are a valuable part of the City of Nanaimo emergency services team,” Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog said in the release. “They have been called upon several times to support other communities over the years and have always answered the call. Our thanks to this dedicated group for supporting the residents of Lytton and the other communities in their time of greatest need.”
