Nanaimo Fire Rescue extinguished a fire at a homeless camp near Coal Tyee Elementary School on Saturday afternoon.
The fire was reported at 1:20 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at the 2400 block of Nadely Crescent, although it actually occurred in a wooded area between the school and Northfield Road in the area leading to the Nanaimo Parkway, according to Martin Drakeley, Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant fire chief.
“It was a 20-by-20 [foot] area that was actually a homeless encampment and again, we won’t really know what started it until we can get investigators out there, if they’re going to go. The damage was kind of restricted to all the belongings that were there.”
Drakeley said there was no injuries, as there was no one present at the camp.
