No one was home when a fire broke out in a house in south Nanaimo, but firefighters did manage to rescue a dog from the residence.
Firefighters responded to a home in the 700 block of Victoria Road shortly after noon Friday, Aug. 31, to find smoke emanating from the structure.
“It looks like it started in the crawlspace,” said Karen Fry, Nanaimo Fire Rescue chief, at the scene. “There was no one home, but the firefighters did rescue a dog from inside the house.”
The dog was, which was not injured, was looked after by a neighbour until its owner arrived on the scene.
“The fire was contained to the crawlspace,” said Kevin Lillingston, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer, in an e-mail. “One person displaced due to smoke damage in the house.”
No one was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
