Nanaimo school district will have a new superintendent in time for the start of next school year as John Blain has announced his retirement.
Blain will step down effective next Aug. 1 and the board has hired a human resources firm to search for his replacement.
“The district has hired the recruitment firm (GoFutures) and it’s a nationwide search. They do the interviews, they receive all the resumés, they do everything for us,” said Dale Burgos, school district spokesman. “Then what they do is bring it down to a certain number of potential candidates and then those candidates come in and are interviewed by staff, by the board and pre-interviewed by the recruitment firm.”
The firm will consider internal candidates as well, said Burgos.
In a press release, Blain said there were a number of projects he hopes to tackle in this, his 40th year working in education in the province.
“A priority is to continue creating the foundation of becoming sustainable to support the many new educational changes here in [the school district],” said Blain.
The school board expressed its gratitude for all the work Blain has put in.
“Superintendent Blain has done an amazing job navigating the district through numerous changes such as the new curriculum and reporting structures as well as the recent changes following the Supreme Court of Canada decision,” said Steve Rae, school board chairman.
