A man has been hospitalized with serious life-threatening injuries after a car crash on White Rapids Road south of Nanaimo early Friday morning.
A passing motorist discovered a single-vehicle collision on White Rapids Road at 2 a.m. Friday. According to Nanaimo RCMP, an extensively damaged vehicle lay in the roadway after apparently losing control and crashing.
The driver, a male in his early 20s from Nanaimo, was alone in the vehicle and was flown to hospital by air ambulance. Police say he is in serious condition.
He was wearing his seat belt when emergency crews arrived.
“Investigators believe that without the deployment of the airbags and the use of the seat belt, the driver would not have survived the impact of this collision,” said Cpl. Jon Stuart, spokesman for the Nanaimo RCMP, in a press release.
The roadway was closed for several hours while police investigated.
The police service dog and a FLIR camera were used to comb the area and make sure no one had been ejected from the vehicle. A collision reconstructionist also attended the scene because of the seriousness of the injuries and a further investigation is being carried out by the Nanaimo RCMP municipal traffic unit, according to the press release.
Police ask if anyone has information about the accident to please contact Nanaimo detachment at 250-754-2345.
