Nanaimo RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit has been called upon to investigate a fire that ignited under a wooden boat.
The boat, which was stored in the driveway of a home at 363 Maple St., suffered damage after material under the craft caught fire at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Capt. Ennis Mond, Nanaimo Fire Rescue chief fire prevention officer, said the fire could have become a disaster because of its close proximity to a home on an adjacent lot.
He called police after conducting his initial inspection of the fire damage.
Fire could be seen on the boat’s hull and in wooden bracing under and beside the craft. Mond said the bracing would have to be inspected to ensure it is safe for investigators to work under the boat.
Mond would not comment on what he discovered that caused him to deem the fire as possibly suspicious.
