The Nanaimo RCMP have created a safe place outside their detachment for community members to make exchanges and drop-offs.
Community exchange zones are common throughout communities across North America, according to a Nanaimo RCMP press release, and are used by people to sell goods online or for custodial exchanges of children from one spouse to the another. The designated parking stall for Nanaimo’s exchange zone, located in front of the detachment at 303 Prideaux St., is marked with a blue sign and is constantly under video surveillance.
“With this designation, we believe it offers a level of reassurance to the public and provides a relatively safe and respectful location to conduct interactions,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.
The community exchange zone does not record audio of transactions made there.
The Nanaimo RCMP detachment is open to the public Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For after-hours police assistance, an intercom call box is located at the detachment’s front door.
