Nanaimo robbery re-enacted to help solve crime

Actors volunteer to re-enact crime in hopes of generating clues that could help catch suspect

Volunteer actors joined RCMP and a Shaw TV videographer to re-enact a crime in hopes of stirring up clues to solve it.

The crime they hope to help solve was a robbery Jan. 8 at a home on Winchester Avenue in Harewood where a 79-year-old woman fought back against a man who broke into her home and managed to flee to her neighbour’s to call police.

The woman lost her purse and cell phone in the encounter and was traumatized by the incident, which has yet to be solved by police. The woman was also the victim of a break-in and theft two days earlier.

The re-enactment, filmed by Jocelyn Matwe of Shaw, portrays the violence of the encounter and will hopefully jog memories from potential witnesses who might submit tips to Nanaimo and District Crime Stoppers that could help investigators catch the suspect.

“We were on scene within four minutes, but we couldn’t find the guy,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman and Nanaimo and District Crime Stoppers coordinator. “So we’re hoping this will assist in identifying who this person is and bring him to justice.”

The reenactment will be broadcast on Shaw TV and appear on the Nanaimo and District Crime Stoppers website before the end of January. Online links to the re-enactment video will also be added to Nanaimo RCMP’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or, to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, text 274637, keyword Nanaimo or submit a tip online at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com.
