Nanaimo slashing claim proves false

Mounties in Nanaimo drop investigation after discovering a knife attack against an army reservist never happened.

Nanaimo RCMP have dropped the investigation into an alleged assault of an army reservist who claimed his neck was slashed by an unknown assailant last week.

The incident allegedly happened late March 6 while the reservist was waiting for a bus on Fifth Street near the University Shopping Mall.

The man was taken to hospital where he received several stitches to close a slash wound to his neck.

The incident launched a major investigation by the RCMP.

Police now say the investigation led them to believe the attack never happened.

“Since my original statement on this case, it has come to light that the allegations made by the Reservist were not true,” said Supt. Norm McPhail, officer in charge of Nanaimo detachment, in a press release issued today (March 13). “This incident did not happen, and there is no longer any need for community concern.”

Investigators shared their findings with the Canadian Armed Forces.

McPhail said no charges are pending against the reservist since investigators determined there was no criminal intent when he made the false claims.

Army spokespeople in Edmonton said the Canadian Armed Forces are confirming details about the case before commenting publicly.
