The province elevated the drought level condition on eastern Vancouver Island and much of the coast to Level 3 – Very Dry on Monday, but the city says Nanaimo’s water supply is in good shape and will stay with Stage 2 watering restrictions.
Stage 2 watering restrictions – every other day watering – have been in effect since May 1 and will remain in place until the end of September, according to a city press release issued Tuesday, July 31.
The provincial drought level is not related to and should not be confused with the city and Regional District of Nanaimo watering restriction stages.
“We are pleased to report that Jump Lake is at a healthy level of storage. Water use is at seasonally high levels, but is not excessive,” Bill Sims, city director of engineering and public works, said in the release. “Efforts at conserving water now will help make sure that Nanaimo’s supply will remain healthy throughout the summer, and will allow us to ensure that flows to the Nanaimo River can be supported as well.”
At Stage 2 watering restrictions, even-numbered houses can water on even number days and odd-numbered houses can water on odd number days. Sprinkling is permitted for two hours between 7-10 a.m. or 7-10 p.m. Vegetable gardens and fruit trees are exempt from watering restrictions, as are businesses that require water for operations.
