I am a good listener and am trained as a mediator, seeking ways to meet everyone’s interests in respectful and creative ways. I believe it is possible to serve the needs of our residents and businesses at the same time. I am community-oriented, having helped to organize many public events and services. I am an experienced “meetings guy”, get along with most people, and appreciate the give and take required to create a cohesive group. I am also an action-oriented person, not just a talker, who isn’t afraid to ask tough questions and make decisions.

Energy, enthusiasm, youth, ideas and leadership. I am a ‘moderate’ candidate who is caring, creative and committed. I have a wide variety of work experience, an education in political science, and am a graduate of Leadership BC. My community service includes work on the Crystal Meth Task Force, volunteering for the Salvation Army and Rotary Club, and teaching Sunday School at my church where I have recently been elected to serve as a board member. I am devoted to making Nanaimo a better place to work and live and believe a seat on city council offers the best opportunity to lead my community and achieve this.

I believe that with my history as a long time resident of this area, I will be able to provide some insight as to what works and what the residents of Nanaimo would like to see. I was employed by a municipality south of Nanaimo for seven years and am sure that the experience gained there will help with decision making on council. Having been employed by two different engineering firms in Nanaimo, for a total of over 11 years, I have some idea of the large infrastructure deficit that exists in the City of Nanaimo. Aside from being employed by an engineering company in Nanaimo, I have no other ties or obligations to anyone that would unduly influence any decisions that I would make as a councillor. I would be able to follow the guidelines laid out in the City of Nanaimo literature, regarding conflict of interest. I have a reasonable sense of humour and get along with most people.

Darcy Olsen

I am progressive, open-minded, and I reside in Harewood, a geographic area of the city not held currently by any members of council. I also want to work effectively with the city’s partners such as the labour council, the chamber of commerce, Snuneymuxw First Nations, Vancouver Island University, the Nanaimo school board, the port authority, the 7-10 Club, and the Nanaimo and Area Land Trust, just to name a few.

Bill McKay

Age: 55

Occupation: Businessman

Years in Nanaimo: Since 1969 – Relocated here in 2004

When I entered management with the Ministry of Transportation and Highways, I was in fact embarking on a new career. I entered the conflict resolution program at the Justice Institute of B.C. and worked very hard, studying areas of negotiation, conflict resolution, communication, and collaborative studies. I believe my communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills will serve me well in my duties as councilman. I further spent considerable time involved in labour relations and project management. I have worked on projects up to $5 million, with refit and remediation projects up to $500,000 on a recurring basis.
