Nanaimo will celebrate International Women’s Day over lunch

International Women's Day happens Thursday, March 8

  • Mar. 3, 2018 12:00 a.m.

The achievements of women and hurdles yet to be overcome will be in the spotlight next week during International Women’s Day.

“It’s an international day that women think about their achievements and the progress that’s been made and how life has been changed,” said Barbara Waine, organizer of the Zonta Club of Nanaimo’s International Women’s Day luncheon.

The globally recognized day is March 8, and not only celebrates the achievements of women but is a call to action for gender parity, according to the International Women’s Day website, which says this year’s theme is Press for Progress.

Nanaimo city councillor and former RCMP member Sheryl Armstrong will be the guest speaker at the Zonta Club of Nanaimo lunch to talk about progress in addressing domestic violence.

The lunch takes place at the Coast Bastion Hotel. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and tickets can be purchased for $35 in advance at KC’s Boutique, by phone at 250-758-2267 or by contacting zontaclubnanaimo@gmail.com.

Vancouver Island University is also marking the day with an art display at the VIU Library, Building 305, from March 8-23 and a free International Women’s Day Lunch at the Royal Arbutus Room on March 8. The lunch, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., features MP Sheila Malcolmson as a guest speaker and music by Shruti Ramani. Guests must register by March 5 and can get more information by calling 250-754-8866.

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom will host an International Women’s Day drop-in tea between 3-6 p.m. at the Nanaimo Harbourfront Library’s upstairs meeting room. All women are welcome to join the group for tea and goodies; for information, call 250-753-3015.

The International Women’s Day tea by Equal Voice Central Vancouver Island is cancelled.
