A Nanaimo woman is well over 40 and fabulous and hoping to win prize money that her daughter’s family could really use.

Carolyn Hancox Barr, 67, a longtime Nanaimo resident and former fitness centre owner in the city, is in the running in an online contest called Fab Over 40.

The grand prize is a two-page spread in New Beauty magazine, $40,000 and a spa vacation, but it’s the cash prize that is motivating Hancox Barr, according to a press release. Her son-in-law suffered a stroke while working at his construction job this past spring and after 10 days in the hospital, it was discovered that he had a pre-existing condition that probably caused the stroke, meaning he wouldn’t be entitled to workers’ compensation.

Hancox Barr’s daughter still works, but without two salaries coming in, the family of four is “financially devastated,” noted the press release.

“The winnings from this international contest would support my daughter’s family for at least a year and allow the family to get back on their feet financially while [my son-in-law] continues to heal,” said Hancox Barr in the release.

So far she has made it through three elimination rounds of voting with the support of friends and family, and she is now reaching out to the community to help her the rest of the way. There are three more rounds of voting before the winner is chosen Sept. 23.

“People can vote for me daily every 24 hours if they want or just once. Whatever they have time for, I would be so grateful, Hancox Barr said.
